The goal of personal development is to become a fully functioning human being.
There are many different ways of explaining what that is. However, I really like Wayne Dyer's
explanation. He states that a fully functioning human being is someone who:
- Feels all emotions and
responds to them appropriately they do not have defense
mechanisms covering their emotions up, they dont bury their feelings or
take them out on others
- Embraces change and does
what they want to do they are not controlled by fear or
co-dependent on any substance, activity or person for their fulfilment
- Behaves responsibly
respecting the rights of others they do not criticise or hurt
others, if they do accidentally, they admit their mistake and take
corrective action
- Nurtures themselves, looking
after their body with good nutrition and appropriate levels of exercise
they do not neglect their body, they love and accept it just the way
it is.
- Accepts themselves as they
are and maintains a high level of self esteem
they do not
criticise themselves or measure their self worth based on outside sources
such as income, status, looks or material possessions
- Honours their own needs and
creates a life that they enjoy they do not stay in a job or
relationship that they dislike, they do not complain and play victim
- Trusts their intuition to
guide them forward they do not ignore their gut feelings or
other bodily messages
- Feels connected to others
and
the universe they do not focus just on themselves, but feel a
sense of awe and beauty about human beings and their capabilities as well as
the planet. They radiate love and have an attitude of gratitude about them
- Focuses on personal growth
for the long term they do not think there are quick fixes, they
recognise that healing and becoming all that they can be are life long
quests that lead to great rewards. They love to learn and do so by observing
themselves and others, reflecting on their thoughts, reading relevant books,
attending seminars, meditating, doing healing work or any other activity
that they get drawn to which leads them to greater understanding.
